Where Can I Find the Shutoff Valve for My Fridge?

I'm trying to locate the shutoff valve for my fridge, but it's been a challenge. My house was built in 1979, and I've already checked under the sink where I replaced some drywall, but I couldn't find any old pipes. I don't have a basement, so I'm wondering if it's possible that the water line is running through the attic? If not, where else should I check?

Looks like you found it on the water heater! But just a note for anyone else in the future: sometimes the fridge shutoff is tapped into the sink waterline after its cutoff, so it might not have its own separate valve.

It could definitely be in the attic! If your water lines are routed there instead of below, that's a solid possibility. You might find a saddle tap with a cutoff valve where the pipes meet. Really depends on how your house was plumbed!

What if the water pipes are running in the foundation instead?

Check the wall behind the fridge; there's likely a copper line hiding there. If that’s the case, you might need to shut off the whole house water supply and add a cutoff valve to that line instead of tearing down walls for a search. It could save you a lot of hassle!

I just realized that the shutoff is actually on the supply line to my water heater. I've had the fridge for 3 years without ice, and it was right in front of me this whole time! Ugh!
