I'm not very handy, and I'm hoping to get some guidance. I need a piece of wood with specific measurements: 2 3/4" thick, 4" tall, and 18" long. Can I get this at Home Depot? I'm particularly concerned about the 2 3/4" thickness. Is it something I can buy off the shelf, or do I need to look elsewhere?

You’ve got a couple of options! At Home Depot, you can wander around until you find a piece that has the right thickness and then use their self-help saw to trim it to 18". Just buy the whole board; it’ll save you a ton compared to calling someone to do it. Plus, don't stress — plenty of folks, including myself, have used that saw without any issues!
You might want to check out a local hardware store instead of Home Depot. Sometimes, they can help you find something that’s not on display, or they might know someone who can cut it for you. It's worth the visit!

Totally agree! Those smaller shops often have hidden gems and the staff usually know their stuff.
