Where to Find Basswood for Carving in Canada?

Hey fellow woodcarvers! I'm on the lookout for good sources of basswood blanks here in Canada. My first BeaverCraft kit had three blocks that were awesome for carving, but my latest batch from a random Amazon seller is super tough to work with. I also grabbed some 2x2s from a local hobby store, but they're a bit too bulky for me, and I'm contemplating chopping them down once I locate my mitre saw. I've learned about sharpening my tools, and they seem sharp enough, but I'm struggling with the carving itself. I prefer ordering online since I'm not near any big towns with stores like Coop or Home Hardware. Any suggestions for good, affordable places to buy basswood?

You should check out Black Forest Woods in Calgary! They specialize in custom furniture and exotic lumber, and they've been around for about 40 years. If you can't visit, just give them a call with your needs, and they'll help you find the perfect blanks. Plus, buying the blocks and resawing them yourself can save you some cash!

Thanks! I'm actually six hours away from Calgary, so I’ll definitely give them a call. I can cut my own blocks, but I'm a bit limited on size. Maybe I need to find a friend with a bandsaw!
