I'm looking for recommendations on where to buy hardwood that aren't the usual big box stores. Their selection seems limited and the prices can be pretty steep. I've noticed some listings on Facebook Marketplace, but that's not always the most reliable choice. What are your favorite places to shop for hardwood?

You might want to start by googling hardwood dealers in your area or even finding a local sawmill. They usually have better prices than online options or national retailers. If those aren't available, ordering online is an option, but it can be pricier than local sources.
Absolutely check out independent shops. There's this guy near me who sells kiln-dried lumber straight from his garage. His prices on rough sawn wood are much lower than the typical stores. I've actually come to prefer rough sawn wood for my projects!
For sure! Local shops often have more character and better deals.
If you're near Portland, I highly recommend Crosscut Hardwood. Their shop is huge and they have everything from S4S to rough cut wood. It's definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area!

That sounds awesome! I love supporting local guys and getting unique wood.
