Which Crops Benefit Most from Insect Netting?

Hey everyone! I'm diving into gardening for the first time this year, and I've seen a lot of talk about using insect netting. Does anyone know which specific crops really need it the most? I'm quite clueless and just want to make sure I'm protecting my plants effectively.

Also, I've heard about using cardboard around the base of plants to keep flies away. Are there particular crops that would benefit from this technique?

I'm planning on surrounding my main crops with herbs and flowers for a natural pest deterrent, so suggestions for those would be awesome! And while we're at it, what other methods can I use to keep pests at bay? I'd appreciate any detailed info since I'm still learning the ropes!

One last thing—I'll be growing potatoes and heard there's a bird that digs them up (can't recall the name). Is it true that planting them deeper helps, or can I just use netting to stop that from happening?

For reference, here are the crops I'll be growing: Apples, Basil, Beans, Blackberries, Blueberries, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chicory, Chives, Coriander, Courgette, Cucumber, Garlic, Kale, Lavender, Leek, Lettuce, Mint, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Bell Peppers, Potatoes, Pumpkins, Raspberries, Rocket, Rosemary, Spinach, Spring Onions, Strawberries, Sweetcorn, Thyme, and Cherry Tomatoes. It's quite a bit! Thanks in advance for your help!

For your crops, I’d definitely say that leafy greens like kale, broccoli, and cabbage tend to attract pests a lot, so putting netting on them is a good idea. You might want to cover your strawberries too to make sure you get to enjoy them without sharing too much with pests!

Totally agree! Those plants indeed seem to get hit the hardest. Also, I’ve read that garlic and rosemary can help repel some common pests, so consider planting those nearby!

As for the cardboard, that’s a great way to deter flies! It’s especially helpful for crops that are prone to infestations, like carrots and beets. Just keep an eye on things and adjust based on what works for you!

Yes! I’ve used cardboard around my carrots before, and it really did make a difference. Just remember to keep everything clean and replace it when needed.

Regarding those pesky birds messing with your potatoes, I’ve heard of using netting effectively. Planting them a bit deeper is wise too, but netting could save you from potential losses, especially if the bird is as clever as the stories say!

Absolutely! Better safe than sorry! I’ve lost potatoes to birds before, so I’d say use both strategies if you can.
