Which Indoor Trees Can Survive in Cold Climates Like Sweden?

Hey everyone! I'm on the lookout for a tree that I can keep indoors, especially since I want to try to find one that I can gather seeds from in nature. However, I'm living in Sweden where winters can be pretty harsh, dropping to -10°C or even -30°C. I've heard that native trees might struggle with the indoor climate, so I'm curious if there are any tree options out there that can thrive in a pot and handle indoor conditions. I've been considering trees like Birch, Maple, Oak, Pine, and Fir, but I'm open to other suggestions too. Any recommendations?

Keeping trees indoors can be tricky since they often don’t get enough light and don't like the stable temperatures. I’ve tried growing Pine, Birch, and Maple indoors and they were okay for a year but struggled afterwards. If you keep your house above 15°C, consider something from a tropical region like Ficus. Just a heads up, you might need some grow lights to help during the darker months too!

You might want to look into tropical or subtropical trees instead of the ones you mentioned. For indoor spaces, trees like Ficus benjamina are popular because they adapt well and are relatively easy to care for. They can thrive indoors much better than deciduous trees which usually need those seasonal temperature changes.

Honestly, I haven't heard of anyone successfully keeping those native trees indoors without them needing the winter cold. I have a big fig tree that I grow indoors during winter and put outside in the summer, and it does great that way. Just a thought!
