Which is a better investment for my shop: a dust collector or a bandsaw?

I've been fortunate enough to receive a bonus this year, and while 90% is going into savings, I'm treating myself to one new upgrade for my workshop. Currently, I'm torn between getting a solid dust collector or a better bandsaw. I have a 9-gallon Milwaukee shop vac that works well for smaller tools but struggles with bigger ones like my jointer and planer. I also own a small 10" Shopsmith bandsaw that's quite finicky and needs constant adjustments. I'm considering finding a used 14" bandsaw or possibly investing in a quality dust collector. Alternatively, I could get a higher-end dust extractor, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. What path would you choose?

What’s your budget looking like? I’ve been eyeing a new Harbor Freight dust collector and a 14" bandsaw, and I can get both for under $1k without deals. Both seem to have solid reviews!

I found a great deal on a Grizzly dust collector and a Harbor Freight bandsaw on Craigslist. The dust collector has been a game changer for me, even though I haven’t set up the bandsaw yet. It really depends on what you plan to use more.

I think going with the dust collector is a smarter long-term investment. Upgrading from a shop vac to a dedicated dust system can really change the game in your workshop. Your lungs will definitely thank you in the long run!

I completely agree! Just make sure to get something above 1.5hp; anything smaller will leave you wanting more, especially if you plan to connect it to fixed ductwork.
