Which is Better for a Bed Platform: Plywood or MDF?

Asked By CraftyNinja92 On

I'm looking for some advice on building a bed platform for a young adult with disabilities. The person using the bed often jumps on it, so I need to know which material would stand up better under that kind of stress. Should I go with a 3/4" plywood board or a 3/4" MDF board? The board will be supported by a frame made of thin tube steel slats, and I plan to use brackets to secure it. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Definitely go with plywood! It’s way stronger than MDF and will last longer, especially with someone jumping on it.

Plywood is the better choice for a bed platform, especially at 3/4" thickness. You could also add a couple of support legs in the middle to help with stability if they jump on it. MDF tends to snap under pressure, while plywood can flex without breaking.

A lot of high-end furniture uses large plywood sheets for their durability and strength. It’s definitely the way to go for your project.
