I'm trying to drill a horizontal hole into a stud through an outlet cutout, but I'm having trouble finding a 2-3 inch spade bit that can fit through this outlet hole. My goal is to create a straight path for fishing wire from the top. Would switching to a Forstner bit be a good idea since they seem to be available in 3 inches?

Honestly, I think a hole saw would be your best bet for this job. They are specifically designed for bigger holes and might save you a lot of trouble.
You really shouldn't need a 3" hole just to fish some wires. A hole saw is definitely the way to go here. In fact, many manufacturers have kits that include the perfect sizes for jobs like this, which could be more economical than buying a whole set.
That's what I was thinking! A 3" hole sounds excessive unless you're trying to fit something really big through.
Spade bits are actually available in longer lengths, but remember to only use the front part of the bit to cut. Just check out the selection at your local hardware store; they usually have a variety of long spade bits that could suit your needs.

That's a solid point! Plus, with a hole saw, you wouldn't have to worry about fitting a larger bit into that small outlet hole.
