Which is better for starting seeds: the paper towel method or sowing in dirt?

I'm curious if anyone has compared the paper towel method to sowing seeds directly in soil for starting seeds. Did you notice better germination rates with one method over the other?

I'm currently using a ziplock bag for the paper towel method, and so far, everything looks great!

I tried the paper towel method and had great results—everything sprouted within about four days!

Did you face any mold issues? How did they fare once you potted them or planted them outside?

I've personally had more success when sowing directly into potting soil. The paper towel method is handy for checking seed viability since you can see the seeds germinating, but I've struggled with keeping them moist without mold developing. Plus, moving seedlings from the wet paper towel to soil can be tricky when roots start growing in there.

How long did you keep the seeds in the towel? Is mold a common problem? If I skip this method, I usually go with jiffy starter mix because it's a mix of peat moss, vermiculite, and coir.
