Which Milwaukee Impact Tool Should I Get for Home Use: Stubby or Standard?

Hey everyone! I'm in the market for a torque impact wrench mainly for home tasks. I've used one before to help set up a friend's basketball hoop and it made the job super quick, so I'm definitely sold on getting my own. However, I'm overwhelmed with choices because Milwaukee has so many options available. I've heard about the new Stubby model, and there are 3/8" and 1/2" sizes to consider too. Do I really need both? And what's the deal with the M12 and M18 versions? I'd love some guidance on what would work best for my needs, and I'm even open to getting both sizes if that makes sense!

When choosing an impact wrench, it's essential to consider the socket sizes you'll be using. If you're starting out, I recommend the 3/8" size because it's more versatile and easier to find. The M12 Stubby is compact and packs a good punch, perfect for your home tasks. That said, for lighter work around the house, you might find an impact driver more useful since it can handle both screwdriver bits and socket adapters. I practically live by mine! The M12 offers a good balance of power and weight, making it a solid investment without breaking the bank. Plus, I found an excellent deal on a starter kit with a hammer drill and impact driver that comes with a great battery. Check it out!

I've got both the Milwaukee and Dewalt impact drivers, and I lean towards the Milwaukee for its performance. But I'm still on the hunt for an impact torque wrench myself!

For home use, I'd suggest starting with the M12 Fuel Impact Driver, especially if you continue to tackle smaller tasks. If you're planning on working with lug nuts for cars, then the M12 Stubby Impact Wrench might be your go-to since it provides extra torque. Most people usually don't need both sizes; I recommend leaning towards the 3/8" since it's suitable for most typical applications. The 1/2" is nice for larger sockets if you foresee needing those.

I hear you! I'm going to take my time reading through more recommendations before making my purchase decision over the weekend. I'm considering getting the M12 1/2" model with an adapter for my 3/8" sockets.

From your description, it seems like you might benefit more from an impact driver rather than an impact wrench. Wrenches are specifically designed for socket use, while impact drivers can handle various fasteners, including screws. If you eventually decide to go for an impact wrench, you'll definitely still want an impact driver as well. Just take your time to dive deeper into the forum and you'll quickly pick up on the differences between the M12 and M18 options and their use cases.
