Which Router Should I Choose: Plunge or Palm?

I'm trying to decide between getting a battery-powered plunge router, which I've used before, or going for a palm router with a plunge base. I've heard that the palm router is more versatile for outdoor jobs and that with the plunge base, it performs similarly to a full-sized plunge router. Since I absolutely need a cordless option and I have a couple of power stacks available, I'm leaning towards the palm router. The price for the palm router plus plunge base is pretty close to the standalone plunge router, but I'm not sure if there's a scenario where the palm router wouldn't work. Given that I often encounter different kinds of projects, should I invest a bit more for the palm router setup? I'd love to hear about anyone else's experiences with these Dewalt tools!

I've got the 20v trim router along with the plunge base, and I really enjoy using it. It's super handy for quick tasks like adding a roundover to edges or flush trimming smaller pieces. Keep in mind, though, it doesn't have the muscle of larger routers when it comes to heavy-duty work. But if you’re working on lighter projects, the palm router is great for one-handed use, which can be a lifesaver when you're stabilizing your material with the other hand!

Exactly! I always reach for my palm router first too. It's so fun to use, but I did have to remind myself to take it slow sometimes. Overall, it's just a great tool!

I also have the 20v trim router with the plunge base, and it’s been a game changer for lighter jobs. I used to struggle with a heavy corded router, but the trim router is super comfy for one-handed tasks. I was a bit worried about tackling dados in 3/4” plywood, but it did an amazing job. Sure, it can't handle the heavy lifting like my larger router, but for most smaller jobs, it more than holds its own! I have my eye on the larger router, but if I had to pick just one, it would definitely be the trim router.

Don't underestimate the palm routers! They’re great for quick jobs, and the cordless feature makes them even more convenient. Perfect for mobile tasks!
