Which Should I Buy First: A Track Saw or a Table Saw?

I'm in the process of setting up a workshop at my new property, but I currently have limited workspace since I don't have a garage. I want to eventually acquire both a track saw and a table saw, but I'm trying to be strategic about which one to purchase first. I have several projects lined up, like building vanities and cabinets, which will involve a lot of sheet goods. I'm considering either a Milwaukee track saw or a job site table saw like the Dewalt 7491 for now, since I plan to upgrade to a cabinet saw later. Given my constraints, I'm leaning toward the track saw, especially for processing sheet goods, but I'm also worried about the space needed to cut the larger sheets. What do you think?

I remember being in the same boat! I went with a track saw first and I’m so happy with that choice. It handles sheet goods really well, and it’s easier to work with in tight spaces. If you decide to go for a job site saw later, you'll find it useful too, but the track saw will serve you well in the meantime, especially considering your lack of space.

That makes sense! I’m realizing the versatility of a track saw is much more suited for my current situation as well.

I think going with a track saw first is a solid choice, especially since you'll be working with large sheet goods. I have a small workshop, and I've been able to tackle a lot of projects with just a miter saw and a good track saw. You'd be surprised how much versatility a track saw offers for that kind of work! Just make sure you have a good surface to cut on, like a sheet of foam insulation if you lack space.

Absolutely! I just got a portable table saw, but it doesn't get as much use as my track saw. It's super handy for all sorts of tasks.

At my old woodshop, we used the track saw almost exclusively for large format work, and it was a game changer. Definitely consider it based on your projects!

I'd recommend getting the track saw first. It’s perfect for breaking down large sheets of plywood, which sounds like it will fit your immediate needs better than a jobsite saw. Honestly, the portability of a track saw is a big plus, especially when you don't have a dedicated workspace right now.

Yeah, that tracks with what I'm thinking. Once you have a proper shop, then a table saw is definitely a good investment.
