Which Should I Choose: Installer Tool or Impact Driver?

Hey everyone! I've been using Milwaukee tools for about three years and I'm now exploring the M12 range. I've noticed they perform better for home projects but can also be handy in commercial work. I primarily do welding but tackle a bit of everything. I'm trying to decide between getting an installer tool or an impact driver. I already have an M12 drill that I got for free and it meets most of my needs, but I think an impact driver could still be really beneficial. I've come across the installer tool, which seems like a great all-purpose option, though it may lack the power of the impact. I also have an M18 impact driver. What are your thoughts on their use cases and any major pros or cons of each tool?

The installation driver has its perks; it can do things a standard drill or impact can't. It excels in driving screws with finesse due to its design. If your M12 drill covers your main needs, the installation driver adds valuable versatility, especially if you have the additional heads. However, the impact is fantastic for heavy-duty tasks, just be cautious to avoid stripping wood holes if you're not driving large screws. It's more about improving your experience than just raw capability.

You can actually avoid stripping with the installation driver by using the clutch correctly. It seems like hardly anyone uses that feature, though!

Impact drivers are amazing. They're just wonderful!

I personally recommend the installation driver. It's my number one tool at home—so useful that I ended up getting a second one for work! It handles every screw I throw at it without issues. If you’re regularly driving large screws, an impact driver might be better, but for general use, the installation driver definitely has the edge.

The installation driver is designed for installers dealing with awkward angles, cabinet makers, or HVAC pros. I find the drill/impact combo more versatile for my needs since I use T25 screws a lot. Your experience may vary, but I find I rarely need something like a right-angle attachment. My brother loves his, though; he uses it for various home tasks!

I've got both the installation driver and the impact driver. Honestly, I use the surge driver for about 99% of my home projects. The installation driver is excellent for tight spaces, especially when installing cabinets, while the impact driver really shines in automotive work when paired with an M12 ratchet. It all depends on what you'll be doing most of the time!

I have both as well, plus the latest generation of the M12 Fuel 1/4" driver. The M12 Surge is my go-to, too. If I had to pick just one, I'd definitely go with the Surge over the Installation driver.

If you’re working on cars, I'd recommend the 1/4” Hex Impact too. For everything else, either the Installation Driver or the 1/4” Hex Screwdriver works well.

The installation driver is perfect for precision work; it has cool features like changeable heads and a good trigger control. The impact driver, on the other hand, is a powerhouse that's great for drilling, screwing, and removing lugs.
