I just found out that every single outlet and switch in my home is soldered, and I'm really puzzled. Why would someone go through the hassle of doing this? I just want to swap out the old off-white outlets for some fresh white ones, but this is making it way more complicated!

Sounds like whoever did that was really into engineering DIY projects. I've seen people use solder cleverly in circuitry, but this takes it to another level! Just be careful when you're replacing those outlets.
That’s quite a sight! If you need to change them out, just cut the wires and use wire nuts, as long as there's enough wire to work with. Remember to get commercial-grade receptacles and backwire them instead of backstabbing for safety!
Wow, soldering all the outlets is definitely an extreme DIY move! I wouldn’t have thought to do that. Do you have any photos? It must look interesting!
