Why Are Butler Sinks So Popular in Gardens?

I've been working on a small pond using a plastic storage container filled with gravel and rocks for landscaping. While looking into DIY pond ideas, I noticed a trend: many people are using butler sinks for ponds. They seem to have a nice aesthetic, and I get that they might be great for smaller gardens. However, I'm curious about what makes them so popular. Is it just looks, or do they have other benefits? Also, as a side note, my neighbor has a pretty butler sink full of weeds in their neglected front garden, and I've considered asking if they would part with it for my pond. I'm just unsure how to approach this.

Honestly, their weight can be a blessing and a curse! Most people end up leaving them in gardens because they're just too heavy to move easily. I have one myself sitting in the allotment filled with strawberries! It's a great repurposing method. Seems like once they chip or get outdated in kitchens, no one wants to deal with moving them, yet they still work perfectly for holding plants or water.

That explains why I see them everywhere! It's like they become the garden's permanent fixture when people realize how tough they are to handle.

Butler sinks definitely have a visual appeal that plastic tubs just don't match. On top of looking good, they’re also more durable. Unlike plastic, which can leach chemicals into the water when exposed to the sun, these heavier sinks are usually made of ceramic and last much longer. Also, they can hold quite a bit of water without being blown away in a storm, so they're practical too!
