Why Are Drywall Hooks Considered Dangerous for Hanging Pictures?

I recently moved into a condominium that I've owned for over 20 years, and I've started using drywall hooks—those with a little angled nail and a steel hook—to hang pictures and decorations. In the past, my tenants haven't had issues with this. I know enough to avoid hanging things directly above electrical fixtures, but I came across an AI warning that putting a nail into drywall might be risky because of hidden wires. I've seen that electrical wires are typically routed through the wall studs and can't be attached to drywall directly. So, I'm confused as to why a simple 3/4" nail could be dangerous when hanging a picture. Can someone clarify this for me?

Yeah, I wouldn’t stress over it too much. Those little picture hooks are meant to go in at an angle, so they rarely penetrate enough to reach any wires. If you're hanging something heavier, just grab a stud finder to be sure. It's a quick way to avoid any worries.

Good point! I definitely want to avoid that possibility.

A stud finder is definitely a game changer!

If you're worried, look at getting a stud finder that also detects wires. But in general, with those tiny nails, the chance of hitting a wire is low. Just keep in mind that if the electric work wasn’t done right, there could be issues, though that’s pretty rare. Overall, you should be just fine hanging your stuff!

Honestly, a drywall nail shouldn’t go deep enough to hit any wires. Most of the time, people get overly cautious with stories they hear. If you're hanging something lightweight, those tiny hooks are pretty safe to use. Just keep in mind that if the wiring was done poorly or not up to code, there could be a risk, but that's not usually the case.

That makes sense! I guess I get anxious thinking about the worst scenarios.

Exactly! You’re probably more likely to hit a wooden stud than a wire.

You're probably good with those hooks. The risks people talk about mostly come from worst-case scenarios. And remember, if wires are too close to the surface of the drywall, there should've been a nail plate used during installation. If you hit a nail plate, you'd know it. Just be cautious, but you should be fine!

Thanks for the reassurance! It's nice to know I can hang things without too much worry.

Exactly! Just be sensible, and you'll be all good.
