Why are Marvin Infinity windows cheaper than Marvin Ultimate?

I own a 1952 house and I'm trying to replace the single-pane windows while keeping the original Douglas Fir frames. I've received quotes from two companies: Outfit ALPHA quoted me around $20,000 for six Marvin Ultimate windows (including labor), and Outfit GAMMA came in at about $17,000 for six Marvin Infinity windows (also including labor). Both companies have great reputations, but I've heard that the Infinity windows are considered nicer. Can someone explain why I would be paying more for what seems to be an 'inferior' product? Am I missing something important?

It looks like you might be comparing apples to oranges here since you only got two quotes. It’s generally a good idea to get at least three quotes. The Marvin Ultimate is actually known as their top-of-the-line window and is often the best choice for older homes, especially if you're looking for architectural integrity. The Infinity windows, while still good, are made from different materials that are less likely to rot, which some people prefer. Just make sure you compare the specs on each to see what's best for your house.

Honestly, the Ultimates are Marvin's premium option, so they're designed with wood, which can offer better architectural detail for a classic home like yours. They do cost more for good reason. On the flip side, Infinity windows are made to be more durable and less prone to rot, which is a huge plus. It really comes down to what you value more: the traditional look and feel of wood or the durability and modern construction of the Infinity. Don't be surprised at the price difference; it's pretty standard for high-quality options.
