I've noticed that the bottom 30cm of my basement support columns is rusting, and I'm wondering what might be causing this issue. I suspect it could be moisture wicking from the concrete. Is this something serious that I should be concerned about? Would applying rust paint be sufficient to handle the issue, or do the columns need to be replaced?

Moisture wicking from the concrete is usually the culprit for this kind of rust. If it’s only surface level, a wire brush followed by a rust-inhibiting primer should do the trick. But keep an eye out for deeper rust, as that can indicate more serious structural issues requiring professional help.
Switching from adjustable jackposts is a good idea, as they aren’t the best for permanent setups anymore. If you can, consider replacing them. Just remember to check how they're installed at the base since that affects moisture exposure.
That probably depends on local building codes where you live.
The rust on your columns is likely due to moisture coming up from the concrete. If it’s just surface rust, you can clean it off with a wire brush and then apply a corrosion-inhibiting paint. But if the rust is severe and there's noticeable damage, you might want to consult a professional to check if replacement is necessary.
It looks like it's just surface rust, but I'm cautious about how it might progress over time.

What about the inside of the hollow pipe? Wouldn't that be rusting too?
