Why Are My Doors Not Latching Properly?

Hey everyone! We just bought our first house, and we're noticing that several of the doors don't close and latch as they should. It often takes a good amount of force to both shut and open them. This issue isn't just limited to interior doors; it's affecting our front and back doors too. One door that really caught my attention is the bathroom door, as it seems to hang a bit crooked, which makes me think maybe the latch wasn't installed correctly. We've even bought new door knobs and hinges, hoping that would help. However, we really want to avoid going through the hassle of replacing everything only to end up with the same issues. Any advice on how to fix this?

I had a similar situation where my house's foundation settled, and my doors became unaligned. Simply replacing hardware won’t always fix that. You might need to look into adjusting the door frame itself.

It's important to check that your doors are about 3/16" narrower than the installed jamb. Also, make sure everything is square and level because that can really affect door functionality.

Keep in mind that wooden doors can expand or contract with humidity changes. If you notice the doors fit fine when it’s humid but not when dry (or vice versa), this could be your issue. Check for even spacing around the door and consider shimming or adjusting hinges.
