Why Are My Onions Starting to Bolt So Early?

Hey everyone! I'm noticing that a number of my yellow onions are starting to bolt, and they haven't even begun bulbing yet. I set them out as transplants back in January, but with the temperatures already hitting some pretty hot levels for this time of year, I'm wondering if that's causing the issue. Has anyone else experienced this early bolting? What can I do to fix it, or what might I have done wrong?

It sounds like you're experiencing some typical issues for your zone! In your area, it's generally best to plant short day onions, especially considering the climate. I've been in zone 8b as well, and finding short day onion seeds can be tough. I planted 'Texas Grano' on the advice of my extension service, starting the seeds in shade in August. They do great if you give them a bit of time to acclimate. Just remember to let them chill out over winter without watering too much. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip! I actually have the Texas 1018 sweet short day onions. They were planted in January right before that big winter storm, so I’m also curious if this heat is a factor. Any advice on that?
