Why Are My Transplanted Cucumbers Dying?

Asked By GardenGuru123 On

I've started cucumber plants indoors using peat pellet greenhouses, but I'm having a tough time when it comes to transplanting them outside. They seem to be struggling and dying right after I move them. I know these plants don't like root disturbance, and I've been careful not to mess with them too much. Does anyone have tips on how to successfully transplant cucumbers without them wilting or dying?

Are you letting your cucumbers acclimate to the outdoor environment? They usually need a few days to adjust to the temperature and sunlight before being fully exposed. Start by giving them some shade and gradually introduce them to sunlight—I've had success with this method frequently when transplanting cucumbers!

Honestly, you might want to consider just planting the cucumbers directly outside instead of trying to transplant them. It can be a hassle, and they often don't take well to being moved around. If your season allows, that might be the best route.

I get that! Unfortunately, I can't since my growing season is shorter for the variety I want. I'll give some direct sowing a shot next time!

Could you share what your transplanting process looks like? A detailed look at how you’re moving them might help figure out what’s going wrong.

Sure! I cut open the pellet bag to help them escape and plant them into new soil. I also pat it down for support and give them a good drink afterwards, but they still droop a few days later.
