Why Are There So Many Wasps This Year?

I've noticed a surprising number of wasps around my house lately—up to 10 every day! I did a quick check of my property but couldn't find any nests. On top of that, my dahlias at the allotment are absolutely swarming with them this year, way more than I've seen in the past. I counted over 50 wasps buzzing around the plants yesterday. Is this just a particularly good year for wasps, or is anyone else experiencing this too?

I've been seeing a lot of them too! We had two nests in our house, which definitely contributed to the influx. With how many you're spotting, there's likely a nest close by. If they’re coming in that frequently, it might be a good idea to track them down!

For sure! I've been keeping tabs, and a friend mentioned they’re usually near fruiting plants.

Strangely, I haven’t seen many wasps at all this season, just a load of bees and hover flies. But I’m hearing from others that wasps are everywhere this year! Definitely concerning for those who are dealing with swarms. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

Yeah, it seems like this year has a ton of wasps! I think the hot, dry summer plays a role. I remember a while back when we had a similar situation during a heatwave. It's odd because they're usually more of a problem in August. You should definitely keep an eye out for any nests nearby since they’re coming into your house so much. Maybe follow a few wasps around in the late afternoon to see where they're heading!

That makes sense! I noticed fewer wasps in the past couple of years, so this spike is really surprising.
