Why Are Window Installation Costs So High Right Now?

I'm considering replacing two double windows, each sized around 35" x 71", located in my living room and the bedroom above. I originally got a quote at the end of 2024 for $4,400, which included both the windows and labor. After not moving forward, I requested an updated quote, and it came back much higher at $8,400. Then, another company quoted me $11,000 for those two windows plus an additional window in my office, which is the same size. Is it true that we're reaching the point where window replacements are costing $3,600 to $4,400 per double window? I understand that window types matter, but for average quality windows, this seems excessive. Also, I'm located in South Jersey, near Philadelphia.

It might be worth getting a few more quotes. That contractor could be really busy or just trying to get more margin. The pricing trend you're seeing, especially in costly areas, isn’t shocking. Even so, the jump from $4,400 to $8,400 for similar work is a hefty spike, even with inflation. Just for reference, in NYC, I've spent between $1,500 and $3,500 per window for reasonable quality double-hung windows, based on install conditions. Complexity can drive prices up, so if there’s extra work involved, that could explain some cost increases.

Yeah, I agree! It's definitely smart to compare multiple offers to get a better idea.

I'm in the middle of my own window replacement project and I'm looking at around $20,000 for seven double windows and two triples with a general contractor. It's a big investment!

As a contractor, I typically charge about $700 to $900 for first-floor double windows and $1,300 to $1,600 for second-floor installations, which includes the entire process. I might be underpricing compared to others, but it's not unusual for some companies to inflate quotes during high-demand periods, especially if they're busy.

That’s good to hear! Getting competitive pricing really does make a difference in such a big project.

I've noticed that a lot of window installers in my area have been bought by private equity, which seems to have impacted pricing. This might explain some of the increases you're seeing.
