Hey everyone! I'm working on my garage and trying to install a pegboard. My house was built in 2004 in Canada, and I started by screwing in some 3/4 inch thick wood strips to support the pegboard. I used 2 1/2 inch #8 wood screws to go through the wood strip, drywall, and into the stud. The issue is that for one of the screws, 2-3 feet down from the ceiling, I couldn't drill my pilot hole all the way through. I hit something hard and when I tried to continue, the screw broke inside the stud. I managed to screw it in a few millimeters lower, but I'm concerned about what I might have hit. There's a bathroom above the garage and an outlet nearby, which makes me worry I could have hit a wire or something. I checked both sides of the stud but didn't see anything metallic or any wires. Do you think I might have just hit a knot in the wood, or is it possible something else is going on that would prevent my screw from going through?

Sounds like you might be hitting a nail plate. These plates are installed on studs to protect wires and pipes. If that’s the case, it’s there to stop you from going too deep and potentially causing damage. Just a heads-up!

But with a 2 1/2 inch screw, wouldn't I usually go through the stud and hit the plate? And if it’s a metal plate, shouldn’t there be wires running horizontally in line with my hole?
