Why Can’t I Drill Through My Stud? Did I Hit Something?

Hey folks,

I need some help here! I'm working on adding a pegboard to my garage wall (built in 2004), and I've hit a snag. I'm putting up some wooden strips for support and using 2 1/2 inch #8 wood screws. The top screw went in fine, but for the bottom screw about 3/4 inch lower, I couldn't get my pilot hole all the way through. I hit something hard, tried to drive the screw anyway, and it broke inside the stud. I managed to get it in a few millimeters lower, but I'm worried now.

Here's the kicker: there's a bathroom above the garage and an outlet on the left side of the stud I'm working with. I even checked both sides of the wall where I drilled to see if I hit any wiring or metal plates, but found nothing. Could I have just run into a wood knot, or would my screw not have gotten through everything it needed to? Thanks for any insights!

It sounds like you might have hit a metal plate that’s used to protect the wires inside the walls. Those are often installed in spots where electrical wiring is present. You mentioned that you didn’t see any wires after opening the wall a bit, but sometimes they can be obscured. Also, are you sure you’re drilling deep enough? If you only have a bit left to go, you might still be hitting a tough spot. And about pre-drilling for the pegboard, it may not be necessary unless you're trying to avoid splitting the wood strips!

I managed to go about 0.25/0.5 inches in, so it sounds like it might be a tough spot. I was just worried I’d hit something important!
