I've been searching for cedar 2x2s at my local lumber yard, but they only have 1x4s available. Is it just me, or is anyone else having the same issue with cedar 2x2s being out of stock at places like Home Depot and Lowe's? I'm curious if there's a reason behind this shortage.

Lumber availability can be tricky! A lot of it depends on factors like seasonality and demand from builders. In my area, cedar usually comes back in stock during spring and stays until the end of summer when everyone is working on fences. But sometimes it can fly off the shelves, especially when contractors come in early to grab supplies. So, keep checking back!
That makes sense! I've noticed the same thing around my neighborhood. It's all about timing, I guess.
Just a heads up, I’ve never really seen 2x2s available at any of my local lumber yards, so it could just be a rare size. Maybe you could consider cutting down some 4x4s if you can’t find what you need!
Sometimes you just have to get creative. I suggest checking out a deck supply for better options or stock. They might have the dimensions you're looking for without as much hassle.
If you're struggling to find smaller lumber like 2x2s, it might be worth checking with a deck supply store or even considering a special order. I work at a cedar sawmill in BC, and we actually stopped producing smaller sizes recently because we could sell the wood chips for better profit. But once those chip prices go down, hopefully, we can get back to making those smaller pieces again.
Very interesting! I had no idea chip prices could affect lumber availability.
Thanks for the insight! I'll look into special ordering. That could be my best bet.

Totally agree! It's like a race to get what you need before the contractors clean out everything.
