Why did my fuse blow when I turned off a light?

Has anyone else ever experienced a blown fuse when turning something off? It's usually the opposite for me! The other day, I started my washing machine and after it had been running for about 5 minutes, I turned off the overhead light and suddenly lost power to both the washing machine and the light. I switched the fuse off completely and then back on, restarted the washer, and was able to control the light without it affecting power again. I'm looking for any thoughts or advice on what might be causing this, aside from the obvious suggestion to call an electrician, which I plan to do.

This can definitely happen with GFCI circuits! You might want to check if your circuit breaker is GFCI protected. They can trip under unusual conditions, like when one appliance is turned off while another is running. Make sure all connections are tight and there aren’t any water leaks nearby.

That's good to know! I've had similar issues with GFCI circuits before, especially when it's raining. Always good to get it checked out!

This sounds pretty strange! Sometimes, electrical issues can be caused by faulty wiring or a component inside the appliance. If you’re comfortable with it, inspect your outlets and see if you notice anything unusual. But definitely keep that electrician visit on your to-do list!
