Why Do I Need a New Door Instead of Just a Lock?

I've been told that our front door needs to be replaced, but I'm not quite sure why that's the case. It's a metal door in a rental property with a few minor dents, nothing too serious. The issue is that the lock has failed—it can only be locked from the inside, which means someone has to stay home to secure the house. We requested a new lock ASAP, but the contractor suggested we replace the entire door instead. This could take a while, and I feel like it's not even necessary. In the meantime, we can't lock the front door. Can anyone point out what might be wrong with the door?

Your lock is totally non-functional, which is a security issue. I get that you're worried about the time it takes to fix it, but a door replacement might not actually take that long—probably about the same as just changing the lock.

They probably want you to get a new door because installing a new lock on a metal door can be a hassle. It's usually quicker for them to just swap out the entire door instead of messing with the lock installation.

Yeah, that makes sense. But the old lock can definitely be replaced without needing to change the whole door.
