Why do landscapers wear long sleeves and jeans in the heat?

I'm working in HVAC and observing a professional landscaping crew mowing the lawns in my subdivision. They're all dressed in thick jeans and long sleeves despite the temperature being a scorching 96°F! I can't help but wonder how they cope with the heat. Isn't it uncomfortable? Do they really avoid heat exhaustion like that? I mean, if I were in their shoes (or pants, rather), I'd probably melt! What benefits do they get from dressing like that?

I’ve been landscaping for years, and honestly, you adapt to the heat over time. It’s a rough job, but keeping your arms and legs covered keeps you safe from sunburn and bug bites. Many of us prefer long sleeves and pants to avoid that nasty poison ivy or snake encounters. The sun is way more brutal than the actual heat sometimes!

Yep! The more you work in the heat, the more your body adjusts. It’s all about staying safe while working.

That’s true! People don’t realize how much protection long pants provide versus the comfort factor.

In places like Phoenix, they often wear longer clothes to protect against brutal sun exposure. Jeans might sound crazy, but they help fend off UV rays while preventing skin damage. I know it’s hot, but they probably find the heat manageable enough with the right wear. Plus, those longer sleeves can help with bug bites and plant scrapes!

Right? And they're also dealing with thorny plants, so that extra coverage can save some serious pain.

Totally agree! It’s all about sun protection. You can get some pretty nasty burns otherwise.

Long clothes might seem uncomfortable at first, but they can help keep you cooler than you’d expect. It’s all about evaporative cooling. The sweat evaporates under those long sleeves, and you end up feeling refreshed. Plus, if you’re mowing or trimming, protecting your skin from sharp plants and chemicals is a no-brainer!

Many landscapers also have to comply with safety regulations, so wearing these types of clothing can be more than just a preference.

Exactly! And all those reasons you've listed really make sense when you have to deal with bugs and thorns.
