I've noticed that many users here seem to prefer using just rocks as a planting medium instead of traditional soil. I often see recommendations for mixes that include soil, sand, and perlite for planting, but it seems like a lot of folks are going with pure rocks. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind this choice?

A lot of people just use a decorative layer of rocks on top. It looks good and helps with moisture control. It’s not necessarily their only growing medium, but it makes the plants look nice!
I’ve had great success with a bonsai soil mix enhanced with some fertilizer. That said, I think what you see in posts might just be the top layer of rocks for decoration! Some like it because it helps with moisture retention at the base, but it’s not a strict requirement for growth.

Many succulents come from desert environments where there’s not much soil available. They’ve adapted to thrive in rocky, sandy conditions, so a rock-only medium might mimic their natural habitat better. Just make sure it drains well, as succulents hate sitting in water.
Yeah, I’ve tried that with my seedlings too! The rocks do help keep things dry and prevent rot.
