Why Do Some Beginners Leave Space When Filling Pots?

I've noticed many new gardeners only fill their pots halfway with soil, and I'm curious about their reasoning. I personally always fill mine right to the rim, which leaves a little room once the water settles. Is there a specific reason for this approach?

A lot of us tend to leave some space in the pot to avoid mess when watering. About a quarter to half an inch below the rim helps prevent soil from spilling out if we accidentally overwater. Plus, it allows for better air and light access to the plant.

That totally makes sense! Keeping the mess to a minimum is a smart move.
