Why Does My Bathroom Sink Smell Bad and How Can I Fix It?

Hey folks! I've recently moved into a new (to us) house, and I've noticed that the bathroom sink is starting to have a really bad smell. I think it might be related to the placement of the P trap. Does anyone have suggestions on how to tackle this issue? Should I rearrange the piping or get rid of the flex piping altogether? Just for some context, I'm located in Washoe County, Nevada. I've attached a link to a photo for reference: https://imgur.com/a/875D6Z1

Starting with a flush of hot water and bleach can help get rid of any buildup that might be contributing to the odor. You could fill the sink and a bucket with hot water and then dump it all down—might be a simple first step before getting into more complicated plumbing fixes!

It sounds like your sink might not be vented properly, which can cause the water in the P trap to be sucked out, leading to bad smells. I’d suggest checking the studor vent—it might be stuck open. Also, raising the elbow at the waste line can help; it should be aimed toward the sink downpipe and should be elevated off the ground. Oh, and definitely consider ditching that flex connection! It's not ideal. Good luck with the fix!
