Why Does My Bathroom Water Smell Bad After Renovation?

Asked By CuriousCat123 On

I recently renovated my bathroom, and now I'm dealing with a strange sewer smell coming from it. Specifically, when I turn on the shower, the first gallon of water has a really foul odor. Could this be related to the renovation work? Is there anything I can investigate or fix myself to eliminate the smell?

When it comes to bad odors, it could be related to either the water or the drain. If the water smells off, try running it for a bit longer. On the other hand, if it's the drain causing the problem, letting some bleach sit in the drain might help clear it up.

You might want to check if the sink was moved during the renovation. If the venting setup was messed with, they might have installed a Studor air-admittance valve under the sink, which can sometimes fail and cause smells.
