Why Does My Fuse Keep Blowing When I Use the AC?

I've got a bit of a situation in my apartment, which is actually just a renovated part of a bigger house turned into two units. We don't have central AC, so we rely on window units. Unfortunately, the only window that fits one is in the kitchen. The issue is that whenever the AC is running, I can't use any kitchen appliances without blowing the fuse. It's like playing a game of Russian roulette because even when everything else is switched off, I never know when the fuse will blow. I really don't know much about electricity, but I'm worried that this constant fuse problem can't be good for the wiring.

It sounds like you're overloading the circuit. When you turn on an appliance, it creates a surge of power that can easily blow the fuse, especially if the circuit is already strained. You might need to spread out your appliances a bit more.

I would strongly recommend getting an electrician to take a look. I had a similar situation where I found out the fuse box was set up incorrectly, with the wrong size fuses being used and my AC was directly wired into it. It was a mess, and I hadn't even realized it until the electrician inspected everything. Better safe than sorry!

Just be careful; it’s important to get honest feedback from electricians. Some might not be as helpful as they seem.

You're definitely right about that! It sounds like you might have a couple of issues going on. Have you thought about using a portable air conditioner that can exhaust out of a hose to the window? They can be a real lifesaver for situations like yours. Also, try to plug it into a circuit that doesn't have so much going on, which might help reduce the stress on that fuse.

Definitely look for a two-hose portable AC; they work much better than the single hose ones!
