I've got a Makita 1/2" router set up on the table with a 1/2" straight bit, but no matter how tightly I fasten the bit in the collet, it keeps creeping up gradually. This didn't happen with my last bit. Any suggestions on why this might be happening?

First off, make sure you're not inserting the bit too deep in the collet. You want to pull it back about 1-2 mm to avoid it hitting the bottom when you tighten it. Also, keep the shank area clean and avoid contact with the collar; that can mess things up too. If your router has a hole for the spindle lock, check that the bit is visible through it to ensure proper depth. Oh, and just in case, double-check that your bit is actually a 1/2" and not a 12 mm, since they can sometimes get mixed up!
Another thing to try is swapping out the bit for a different one. Sometimes bits can wear down, or you might just have a faulty collet that needs to be checked for debris or damage. A spare collet can be a good investment since they can wear out without you realizing it!
A worn bit shank or collet can cause issues like this too. Don't forget to take a close look at your equipment and think about keeping some spare parts handy. Also, you could try roughening up the bit's shank with some coarse grit sandpaper before installing it. That can improve grip!
