Why Does the M12 Impact Wrench Have More Torque Than the M18?

I just watched a Project Farm video comparing impact wrenches, and it left me really confused. The video mentioned that the M18 produces less torque than the M12, which contradicts what I assumed since the M18 is typically considered more powerful—and it's also more expensive. I've been looking online and noticed that the M12 Impact driver (model 2562-21) shows more torque compared to the M18 (model 2855-20). I'm new to all this, so I'm trying to understand why the M12 outperforms the M18 in this area. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Don't forget, the comparison isn't fair since you're looking at models released at different times. The M12 might be a newer design using better technology, which could explain its higher torque output.

Basically, the M12's recent upgrades provide a lot of torque while the M18 line has been diversified. So if you're looking for powerful torque in a compact tool, the M12 is your best bet right now. But if you need high torque for larger jobs, the M18's still a great tool too!

Exactly! I’ve found the M12 has been a workhorse for a lot of my projects.

The M18's older generation might be a factor. While the medium and high torque M18 tools are truly powerful, the compact M18 is slightly outdated compared to the newer M12 models. Milwaukee seems to focus on upgrading the M12 line more, which helps explain the torque difference you're seeing.

That makes sense; I just kind of got caught up in all the hype about the M18 being for heavy-duty tasks.

In short, model updates play a massive role. The M12 2562-21 is a top performer in the 12V class due to recent improvements, while older M18 models target different user needs without the same pressure to compete for torque. If you need a versatile tool, both battery lines have strong options for different tasks!

Yeah, I agree! I had no idea how much of a difference that could make.

Great question! The M12 and M18 are actually two different lines, and it's not unusual for an M12 tool to outperform an M18 tool in specific cases. The M12 tools are often designed for a more compact build, which can give them an edge in torque output without the weight and size that comes with the M18. So, while the M18 line has bigger models that can deliver massive torque, some of the smaller M12 models might just hit the sweet spot for certain jobs. Enjoy your wrenching!

Thanks for the response, makes a lot of sense now haha.

I do not understand "...not everybody wants to have more than one battery type...". I thought that everybody wanted both M12 and M18.
