Why has my blueberry stopped fruiting?

My blueberry produced a few berries before, but this year it has none, and some leaves are browning and dropping. It’s in a pot with acidic compost. What should I check first?

I’d start with the growing medium and water. Blueberries need acidic soil, so check the compost’s pH if you can, and use rainwater when available. If the plant has been getting tap water, that may be worth checking too, especially if your water is quite alkaline.

Also make sure the pot drains freely and that the roots aren’t packed tightly into it. If you change the compost or pot, avoid making several big changes at once so you can see what helps.

A bare year doesn’t automatically mean the plant is done for. Young or stressed blueberries can take a while to settle and produce much fruit. The berries it had when you bought it may not tell you how it will crop once it’s established at home.

Keep it in suitable acidic compost, and use a fertiliser made for acid-loving plants according to the label. I wouldn’t keep adding feed just because there are no berries.

Brown leaves can come from more than one thing, so I wouldn’t assume it needs more water just from looking at them. Check the compost before watering. It should stay evenly moist, not soggy, and the pot should let excess water escape.

Pots can also heat up quickly in strong sun. If yours gets very hot, moving it somewhere with some protection during the hottest part of the day could be worth trying.

That gives me a few things to check. I’ll look at the roots and make sure the compost isn’t staying wet between waterings.
