Why Is Getting Residential Permits Such a Hassle?

As a first-time homebuyer, I thought applying for permits to demolish my old, falling-apart garage would be straightforward. Boy, was I wrong! I've already spent over $500 just on permit fees without even starting the project. There's an overwhelming list of requirements, like notifying all my neighbors via certified mail, hiring an exterminator for pest checks, and inspecting for asbestos and lead paint. If I were to hire these services out, it would easily run into the thousands. I've been handling it all myself to save money, but I'm worried about the process when I eventually need to build my new garage.

It feels like the regulations are excessive for a small residential project. And on top of that, I can't shake the feeling that being in a blue state complicates things even further with all the rigorous regulations. I get why there's a housing shortage with such red tape—building something from scratch seems like it would require even more permits! Is it really this hard everywhere, or is it just me?

Yeah, navigating the permit process can definitely be a real pain! I'm a contractor, and I deal with permits regularly. While it can be inconvenient, it's just part of the whole home improvement journey. The folks at the permit office are often just doing their jobs, following decades-old guidelines to protect everyone's safety, especially with concerns like asbestos and lead paint. Trust me, you'd rather deal with some red tape than risk your family's health because of poorly managed demolition next door!

I feel you, but isn't it more about just complaining about regulations than actually acknowledging safety? Demolition can be super dangerous without proper oversight!
