Why is my apple tree growing cherries?

Hey everyone! I've had this dwarf apple tree for about 2 or 3 years, and this year I noticed some cherries appearing along with the usual apples. I'm kind of baffled by this—any ideas on what might be going on?

That’s pretty unusual, but not unheard of! It seems like they might’ve used cherry stock instead of apple, or even hawthorn. You should definitely give those ‘cherries’ a taste! Just to let you know, you can't graft cherries onto apple trees or the other way around due to their genetics.

Looks like there could be some confusion with what you’re seeing. If those are truly cherries, it’s worth checking closely. Take a look inside them or share a few more photos of the branches and trunk so we can help identify them better! It could also be some type of crabapple, which can definitely look like little cherries.

That’s a really interesting situation! It sounds like your apple tree might have been grafted. Apple trees don't grow true from seed, so they’re often grafted onto other rootstocks. Sometimes, cherry rootstock can be used, which might explain why you’re seeing cherries sprouting up.

Yeah, exactly! Those grafts can sometimes surprise you with unexpected fruits.
