Thanks for the suggestion! I figured it out: the wooden plate at the front was screwed in too tightly, which caused the metal front to bend. That was what made the clacking noise. I've fixed it, and now it works perfectly again!
It sounds like the door trim might be getting caught on the baseboard when you open it. It could be worth checking underneath to see if that's the case.
