Why is my dryer producing so much lint?

I've noticed my dryer is generating an excessive amount of lint, which is surprising because I've been using low heat settings. The vent hose goes directly into my garage, which is about 6 feet from the dryer. After each cycle, I clean the lint trap and I even did a deep clean inside it. However, my garage looks super dusty—like it hasn't been cleaned in decades—despite my efforts about 6-8 loads ago. What's going on?

Make sure to check your dryer itself for lint build-up. If you haven’t cleaned the interior and the vent path to the garage thoroughly, that could be causing the excess lint as well. Regular maintenance can really help with efficiency and reduce dust.

Good point! A thorough clean can make a big difference. I had a similar problem, and once I cleaned the dryer vent properly, it helped a lot.

It sounds like your dryer vent setup might be the issue. Since the exit vent just ends in your garage, that’s not ideal. Typically, dryer vents should vent to the outdoors to minimize lint buildup indoors. Even though you clean the lint trap after each load, tiny fibers can still escape into the garage, contributing to all that dust. You might want to consider rerouting the vent to exit outside.

Exactly! It’s kind of surprising that the vent is set up like that. Was your garage an afterthought when they built your house?

Lint mainly comes from your clothes, and it’s pretty normal to have some debris after drying. But venting to the garage is definitely not the best practice. It's worth getting an 'indoor dryer vent' kit if changing it to an outdoor vent isn't an option, but be careful with that if you have a gas dryer! They really should vent outside for safety reasons.

Right? Indoor kits can help but only for electric dryers. Gas dryers need proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide issues.
