Why is my electric hot water tank barely warming up after flushing it?

Hey everyone! I'm a new homeowner and I flushed my electric hot water tank last night. After I completed the flushing process, I turned the power back on, but I'm worried I might have turned it on before the tank was completely filled with water. It's been about 12 hours now, and we're still only getting lukewarm water. Could I have damaged the heating elements? Does anyone have any ideas on what else might be going wrong?

It's possible you cooked the heating element if you turned it on without enough water. But don't worry, they're not too expensive to replace! Just make sure to check the element with a multimeter for a reading around 10-20 Ohms. If it’s outside that range, it’s likely time for a new one. The replacement is pretty straightforward—just drain the tank and switch it out. Just remember to fill the tank fully before powering it up next time!

Yeah, sounds like your top element might be damaged since the water isn’t warming up well. If the bottom element was damaged, you'd feel the water getting cold after a little while, but if it’s always lukewarm, then it’s probably the top one. Also, check if there's any air trapped in the lines after flushing; that can sometimes cause issues too.

Make sure to check the thermal breaker on your thermostats. You might also want to run the hot water until it stops blowing air before turning the heater back on. If your tank feels cool to the touch, it’s likely a heating element issue!
