Why is my Festool ETS 150/5 Sander Drifting?

I just got my new Festool ETS 150/5 sander, complete with a protective pad and 3M Cubitron sandpaper, but I'm facing a major issue: it drifts all over the place! I've tried adjusting the suction, using it without the pad, and playing around with different speeds, but nothing seems to work. Has anyone figured out how to fix this? I'm really disappointed given how much this cost!

Did you reach out to Festool about this? They're pretty good with customer service and might help you troubleshoot the issue. Plus, if there's a defect, they could arrange for a replacement. Let me know how that goes!

Yeah, I contacted them and I'm just waiting for their response. It's nerve-wracking considering the price tag, and I don’t think I can return my 3M extract anymore.

It sounds like what you're experiencing with the 'drift' is actually normal for a sander with a 5mm orbital stroke. That larger stroke means it can feel quite aggressive and tends to move more on its own compared to other sanders with smaller strokes. If you're using it for smaller tasks, the 5mm might not be the best fit for you. Maybe consider switching to a 3mm stroke model for more control during detailed work. Unfortunately, there's no way to adjust the stroke on the ETS 150/5 since it's a fixed aspect of the design.
