Why is my gas fireplace turning on by itself?

Hey everyone! We have a couple of gas fireplaces that are usually just for decoration, and we keep the pilot light on all the time. They're controlled by a wall switch. However, I came home today to a weird smell, sort of like burning dust. When I checked, one of the fireplaces was blasting on full, even though the switch was off! We've turned off the gas for now, but I'm really concerned. Any idea what could be causing this?

Could be a faulty thermostat, or maybe your pet accidentally nudged the switch if it’s one of those Decora style ones. I know my cats can be mischievous around our switches! But since you mentioned the switch was off, yeah, that's pretty odd. Sounds supernatural!

Haha, I’d almost prefer to blame a ghost than deal with fixing it! But seriously, I know pets can be sneaky.

It sounds like there might be an electrical issue with the switch itself. This can be quite dangerous, so I definitely recommend getting an electrician or a furnace expert to look at it before you turn the gas back on. Safety first!
