I recently purchased the M12 Surge after reading a ton of fantastic reviews and doing my homework. I planned to use it mainly for small fasteners around the house and garage since I'm looking for a tool that's quieter and easier to control compared to the regular fuel model. I really want to avoid always wearing hearing protection or risking stripping bolts while tightening.
Unfortunately, my experience with the Surge hasn't been great. It keeps cutting out when I'm tightening or loosening fasteners, almost like it's hitting a current limit and just turns off. This happens mainly in setting 1, but occasionally in settings 2 and 3 too. Is it possible that I got a defective unit? I've come across some videos and posts suggesting this issue is somewhat common.
Also, it doesn't seem as quiet under load when loosening bolts—close to the volume of my regular fuel model. The main advantage is that it is much quieter and easier to control during low-load tasks, which I appreciate.
However, the power is significantly lower than the regular fuel, making it hard to justify the cost. Was I wrong in expecting better performance? Is my tool just defective, or is the Surge not the right fit for me?

Honestly, I had the same dilemma! I sold my Surge after realizing I preferred the conventional impact wrench. It just felt way easier to handle with that classic 'rat-a-tat-tat' impact. The Surge’s quietness is a nice perk for minor tasks, but when you really need power, the regular one just outshines it. Sometimes it's all about what fits your usage best!
Sounds like you're not alone with those issues! I've seen similar complaints about the M12 Surge cutting out during use. Honestly, many users seem to feel it's not quite as powerful as they hoped, especially for tougher tasks. Maybe yours has a defect, but it also might be a design thing that just doesn't suit everyone’s needs. I’d recommend reaching out to customer support for a check-up! But you’re not the only one who’s disappointed, from what I can tell.
I’ve actually had a pretty different experience with my Surge. I love it! Sure, it feels underpowered compared to the regular fuel, but I find it perfect for smaller jobs where I need more finesse. It’s way quieter when doing low-load work, so that part works great for me! But hey, everyone has their preferences, right? Maybe it just doesn't fit your style of working.
