Why Is My New Outlet Showing Power at the Terminals but Not Testing as Live?

I installed a new outlet, and while a Klein voltmeter indicates that there's power at the terminals, my GFCI outlet tester shows no power at the outlet itself. I'm a bit puzzled. Before I make an hour-long trip to the hardware store for a replacement, can anyone suggest what I should check or try? I've already inspected all the wires for loose connections and confirmed that the circuit breaker isn't tripped (though I did reset it for good measure). Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you might have a faulty outlet. If you’re getting 120 volts from the hot to neutral terminal but it’s not working at the outlet, it's likely that the outlet is bad. I’d recommend pulling it out to take a closer look or post a pic if you can. It might just need replacing!

Thanks! I’ll pull it out in the morning and check it out. Appreciate the help!

Hey, just to clarify, since you mentioned it's not a GFCI outlet, ensure that it’s wired correctly if it is meant to be a standard outlet. Sometimes the wiring can be the issue if the connections aren't secure or properly positioned. Double-check that everything is tight and in the right spot!

It's definitely not GFCI, but good tips for anyone else dealing with that kind of outlet!
