Why is my smoke detector chirping after I changed the battery?

I recently changed the battery in my smoke detector, but now it's chirping unexpectedly. Before the battery change, it was working fine. The chirping is very faint—I can barely hear it unless I'm right next to it. I've already turned off the power to check the wiring, and that looks good, plus I drained any residual power. Should I just go ahead and replace the whole detector? By the way, it hasn't been replaced since 2001, so I'm considering swapping all of them out in my house.

Honestly, I’d say go for a complete replacement. Given how long your detectors have been in service, it’s better to invest in new ones than deal with potential failures down the line.

Have you tried swapping in a different battery? Sometimes a new battery can just be faulty, even if it’s fresh out of the package. It’s worth testing just to rule that out.

It could be that your smoke detector is just old and needs replacing regardless of the battery. I had a similar issue with my mom’s detector a while back. After checking the manual, it mentioned that a chirp could indicate a malfunction—especially if the unit's been around since 2001. I’d suggest replacing it since it sounds like it’s time.
