Why is my stained outdoor table sweating sap?

I recently finished staining my outdoor table with Danish oil, and everything looked good until I noticed a sticky substance oozing out of the wood. It seems like it's sap. Can anyone tell me how to deal with this?

If you want an alternative, you might want to look into using an oil-based polyurethane. I’ve heard it can work similarly to shellac for preventing sap seepage. Just be sure to test it on a small area first!

It sounds like you're dealing with Douglas fir, which can sometimes leak sap after finishing. To help with this, consider applying a seal coat of shellac. It should keep that sap from coming through. Good luck!

Definitely sounds like sap to me. If you know the wood type, like if it's Douglas fir, it's pretty common. You could also try using a shellac sealant that works pretty effectively to block it. Make sure to let the wood cure properly, too!
