I'm trying to install a shoe cabinet, but my stud finder is beeping across a really wide area. Is it possible that it's picking up something like piping, especially since it's located near my washer and dryer? Any tips on how to properly use the stud finder?

Make sure you're using your stud finder correctly! You typically need to place it on a cavity, hold it for a second, then move it over. If it's still beeping in the same area, it could be a sign of something else like electrical wires or pipes. You might find it easier to locate studs by measuring from a known point instead. Just mark your tape at the right intervals!
There could definitely be a few factors at play—things like the dryer vent pipe or electrical wiring might be causing those false readings. Just remember that sometimes old houses have beams or solid wood too, so that may be messing with your finder. Just check around a bit to get a better idea of what’s going on!
It might be that your stud finder is just picking up all sorts of stuff. The electronic types can be pretty unreliable. A magnetic stud finder is usually way better—like the $10 ones from CH Hanson. They help you find screws and make it easier to pinpoint where the studs are without all that beeping nonsense! Give it a shot!

For sure! I had the same issue, and switching to a magnetic one made a huge difference!
